It’s Time to Make This Place Liveable!

It took some time before I understood what I wanted to do with our house.  My husband works long hours and at the time we moved in he was taking jobs out of town so in order to get his opinion on the house it took days.  I too had  a difficult job as a Preschool teacher and Director so times were tough.  I was thrilled to be in house we could call own but it was time to make this house liveable!

THE MASTER BEDROOM

This old house had a parlor right off the front porch that had been used as a Master Bedroom. The small closet in the room had been converted into a half bath also.  We liked the idea of this room being the master however, changes needed to be made in order to make the room function for us. So, a good cleaning, paint, furniture and new bedding would be the immediate solution.

THE KITCHEN

Oh the kitchen.  To be honest, I wasn’t sure I could live in the house with the kitchen as it was. There was a very old cook stove and the cupboards are a mess.  The third picture shows a bit of the stove and the walls when they were brown.  My husband loves this old house and everything in it so it was difficult to convince him to remove the old stove but he and few of his friends moved it out to the workshop one day and it made me very happy. Again paint and a few minor additions would have to do for a while.  This kitchen would be a major project and we need time and money to do it.  We painted the lower half of the walls a shade of blue and the upper walls and cabinets white.

My favorite addition is a small dresser that we converted into a coffee station. It is both cute and functional!

THE LIVING ROOM

The living room was a favorite room of everyone who visited.  It had hardwood floors and cove ceilings and plenty of light shining through. Since we had no furniture, we purchased a sectional and an ottoman of course a huge TV.  I received lamps and end tables from my parents and found little things at garage sales.  The room was functioning and soon we were entertaining our guests in style!

Not long after, my husband would take a job out of town. I worked long hours and often times I would return home after dark and be too tired to think much about the house so the house was becoming a place to sleep and that was all.

One weekend however, I decided it was time for the brown walls to leave.  The dark dreary day was made even more dreary with those brown walls and I had had enough. I convinced my mother to come by and help me pick out paint and then teach me how to paint this room.  She told me that first I would have to wash the walls or the paint job wouldn’t work. The walls were pretty bad but after two days, I managed to get them clean.

The following weekend we painted. We chose a pale cream color in order to compliment the floors.  It didn’t take long before we both noticed how this light color was affecting us.  This light color was lifting our mood and showcasing the beautiful details of this room.  The cove ceilings seemed to become more noticeable. The room was beautiful.

After the paint had dried for a few days, we hung drapes and rearranged the furniture.  My husband would be home the next day and I couldn’t wait to get his opinion. Immediately, he noticed this room and was thrilled that we made it look so light and bright.  Two cans of paint worked wonders.
